Jon Copper

Jon Copper is our new Wellness Coach as part of our Rejuvenation Health Services at the Back Resort. Here is Jon’s Personal Story about Nutrition

“Growing up, despite my parents requests otherwise, I ate very poorly. When given the choice, I mainly consumed white bread, sugar, and meat. I was very sick as a child, getting 3 or 4 full blown ear and sinus infections every year up until age 16. A few things happened early in high school that changed my life in a lot of ways through nutrition.

“My freshman year of high school I had a hip injury in the fall that 6 months later was still bothering me. My wrestling coach told me about a supplement called glucosamine. I started taking it, and the limp and pain I had carried for the previous 6 months went completely away within 2 weeks. That triggered me to start studying nutritional supplements.

“My sophomore year, I met Dave Meyer who had just finished an off-season with the Indianapolis Colts. He let me read his NFL training camp manual which talked about the importance of diet and nutrition for athletes- basic things like cutting out sugar processed foods, and eating lots of good fats, fruits, and vegetables. As I read, my whole outlook on what I was eating began a transformation. I was never the biggest or the fastest player, but the things I learned and applied about nutrition helped give me numerous advantages in strength, energy, performance and recovery over my competitors and I count my diligence in this area as one of the primary factors in my ability to play sports at a high level.

“That same year, at age 16, after over 60 ear infections and over 60 rounds of antibiotics and 6 surgeries, my ENT doctor told me that I might have a milk allergy. I cut out milk and have only had one sinus infection in the last 10 years, and that was because I had too much milk and cookies one year at Christmas. That led me to begin studying how certain foods actual cause illness, and others can help the body heal itself and prevent other things.

“Since finishing my sports career, I have been in the field of health and nutrition. I have also helped coordinate Biggest Loser Cville contest benefiting the Hope Community Center and Biggest Loser Richmond benefiting Charity Family Life. My areas of passion have branched out from sports performance and nutrition into prevention, detoxification, wellness, and weight management.

Dr. Dan Asks some important questions of interest to Salem residents - Chiropractor Salem Dr. Dan Asks...

How do you know when you're healthy?
Ask most Salem residents this simple question and you're likely to hear, "When you feel good" or "When you're at your proper weight for your height" or "When you have lots of energy and vitality." Great answers. But our chiropractic patients know that true health is when your body is working as it was designed. True health is how you function, not how you feel.
What happens if you stop chiropractic care when you feel better?
Many Salem folks recognize that this predisposes you to a relapse. Chiropractors know that muscles and ligaments supporting the spine don't fully heal until after symptoms subside.
